News from the Votemaster
Well, today's the day all the political junkies have been waiting for: the fabled Iowa caucuses,
where 200,000 elderly, rural, white voters, mostly women, huddle in schools, firehouses, and
church basements to pick the next president.
Finally we get to find out whether Barack Obama is the second coming of Howard Dean and whether
a multimillionaire businessman who formerly governed a highly Democratic state can buy the love
of Republican farmers. It will be exciting to watch. But as of tomorrow, Iowa will be yesterday's news and the
New Hampshire economy will get a short jolt as all the candidates, consultants,
reporters, and TV crews move there for a short,
but intense campaign leading up to Tuesday's primary there.
The two states are both atypical, but
they are atypical in different ways. Iowa is a homogeneous state full of small farms and the
people there take pride in being "Iowa nice." Iowa represents 19th Century small-town America
at its best.
New Hampshire is a quirky mix of crusty old Yankees, dairy farmers, yuppie commuters to
Boston, artists looking for tranquility, Ivy-League professors, and a variety of other subgroups. It is not homogeneous at all.
The media have built the Iowa caucuses up to something of Biblical proportions, and in a way
they are. The screenplay is David vs. Goliath. On the Democratic side it is Barack Obama and
John Edwards, two little guys, up against the huge Clinton machine. On the Republican side it is
Mike Huckabee against Mitt "$200 million" Romney. Iowa has enacted this
drama many times before. How has it gone?
Let's look at who won the Democratic caucuses in the past.
2004 John Kerry beat John Edwards, Howard Dean, and Richard Gephardt
2000 Al Gore beat Bill Bradley
1996 Bill Clinton was unopposed
1992 Tom Harkin beat Paul Tsongas, Bob Kerrey and Jerry Brown
1988 Richard Gephardt beat Paul Simonm Michael Dukakis, and Bruce Babbit
1984 Walter Mondale beat Gary Hart, George McGovern, and Alan Cranston
1980 Jimmy Carter beat Ted Kennedy
Now the Republican side.
2004 George Bush was unopposed
2000 George Bush beat Steve Forbes, Alan Keyes, Gary Bauer, John McCain, and Orrin Hatch
1996 Bob Dole beat Pat Buchanan, Lamar Alexander, Steve Forbes, Phil Gramm, and Alan Keyes
1992 George H.W. Bush was unopposed
1988 Bob Dole beat Pat Robertson, George H.W. Bush, Jack Kemp, and Pete DuPont
1984 Ronald Reagan was unopposed
1980 George H.W. Bush beat Ronald Reagan, Howard Baker, John Connally, and others
So Iowa is batting .600.
The David vs. Goliath story has unfolded before. On the Democratic side, David has been
played by Howard Dean, Bill Bradley, Jerry Brown, Bruce Babbit, Gary Hart and arguably Ted Kennedy.
The Republican insurgents have been Steve Forbes, Pat Buchanan, and Pat Robertson.
On the whole, Goliath usually won. Small may be beautiful but big is powerful.
If you are actually interested in how the candidates stand on the issues, take a look at this
NY Times piece.
On the other hand, if you want to get an advance peek on tomorrow's spin,
Chuck Todd
has already written it.
