Quite a few people have said they like the site so much they would like to contribute to the cost of running it. We have paid all the costs of running this site ourselves (Web design, hosting, DNS registrations, etc.).
We see this Website as a community service. Also it has helped register thousands of (overseas) voters. The time required to build and run the site have actually been a much bigger drain than the money.
Towards the end of the 2004 election cycle, so many people wanted to contribute money that we opened a PayPal account and started accepting donations. We still do. That money is being spent on increasing the popularity of the site, by running ads on search engines such as Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and in various online media. Closer to November, we usually run ads on the Websites of college newspapers in swing states, not only to drive traffic to the site, but to (hopefully) get students more engaged in politics and get them to vote. A small ad for a week on one college newspaper site can easily run $500, so it adds up.
