Scavenger Hunt, Part IX: Bad Ephemera...
Last July 4, we invited readers to submit suggestions inspired by any or all of the following prompts:
- The single photograph or image that best encapsulates the Trump presidency.
and here)
- Something that would make a terrible Christmas gift for Joe Biden.
- A book that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would never, ever read.
- A t-shirt that would be very apropos for Chief Justice John Roberts to wear.
here)
- The wisest, most insightful, or most pithy quote ever to be uttered by a politician or political figure (need not be
limited to Americans). (Click
here)
- The worst bumper sticker, button, yard sign or other campaign-related ephemera in U.S. history.
- A portrayal of a key figure in U.S. history—image, song, verse, book, etc.—that is even more ridiculous
than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. (Still time to submit here)
- This isn't exactly a scavenger hunt type question, but we're going with it anyhow. Finish this joke: "Donald Trump,
Ron DeSantis and Hillary Clinton walk into a bar..." (Still time to submit here)
We have more than enough submissions to do at least two postings for each of the eight prompts. And we
are definitely going to work through some of that material this week. Today, it's some of the bad ephemera.
- V.L. in New York City, NY:
- J.M. in Stamford, CT: I can't pretend to know enough political graphic history to get this
one even close to right (the "worst" is a hard standard to meet). I quickly scanned a review of the Library of Congress'
poster book, Presidential Campaign Posters: Two Hundred Years of Election Art and found a suggested
semi-finalist, perhaps, from 1908:
- D.R. in Tetovo, North Macedonia:
- B.H. in Southborough, MA:
- M.S. in New York City, NY:
- P.S. in Washington Township, OH: Here's the worst example I know of. Or, at least, the most blatantly racist one.
- C.K.W. in Haymarket, VA:
- D.S. in Port Angeles, WA :
- D.Z. in Poughkeepsie, NY:
- K.K. in San Mateo, CA:
- M.B. in Windsor, CT: This one has offended me more than just about any I've seen (and I
lived in deep-red tea-party territory for 14 years in Virginia). It's on a garage in my town.
- A.M. in Olympia, WA: Jeannie Screws is a Utility District Commissioner in Kitsap County,
WA. Her yard signs are particularly popular with prankster teenage thieves. Nothing like a good old yard sign
adorned with "Jeannie Screws for Utility District Commissioner." She keeps getting reelected.
