News from the Votemaster

Not too many new polls, but a few. Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani are leading big time in New York and New Jersey, as expected. South Carolina is more interesting. Rasmussen has Clinton and Obama tied there at 33% each, but an Opinion Research poll just 4 days earlier puts Clinton ahead by 8%. Since the margin of error on these things is about 4%, this is probably just a statistical fluctuation. Basically, it is too close to call there, and the effects of the earlier states will change public opinion in any case. On the Republican side in South Carolina, Rasmussen has Huckabee and Romney tied at 23% each, but Opinion Research puts Huckabee 7% ahead of Thompson and 8% ahead of Romney. Again, don't take this too seriously. It's too close to call and will change.

Florida is a different matter. This is supposed to be Clinton's firewall and also Giuliani's. A loss here just a week before superduper Tuesday will be painful for either of them. Clinton seems to be safe for the moment, with a lead of over 20%. However, three different polls give Huckabee an average of 25% to Giuliani's 23%, a statistical tie. If Huckabee wins Iowa, South Carolina, and maybe one or two other states, and then Florida, it is hard to imagine Giuliani winning big a week later. At that point it is likely Giuliani will not have won a single caucus or primary and the media will be writing him off for dead. If Clinton loses Iowa, New Hampshire, and even South Carolina, but posts a big win in Florida, she can still do well a week later in the big states where she has huge leads. Conclusion: Clinton is not going to be coronated; she is going to have to fight hard to win this one, but she has a decent chance. In contrast, Giuliani's campaign manager must be sweating bullets now.

Another person probably sweating bullets in the chairman of the Republican National Committee. While home schoolers are wild about Huckabee, the conventional Republican establishment is not. While they want to lower taxes, they don't want to abolish the income tax altogether and replace it with a sales tax. If Huckabee gets the nomination, he will be skewered on that, as well as on his total lack of experience in foreign affairs. In 2000, George Bush also had no experience in foreign affairs, but everyone knew that his Dad was an expert on the subject and people expected junior to ask for Dad's advice when needed. The Democrats will unite behind whoever their nominee is, but a Huckabee candidacy will leave substantial parts of the GOP cold.
